Longtime Senate Fiscal Agency director to join Public Sector Consultants
LANSING, Mich. – After 20 years as the chief fiscal adviser to the Michigan Senate, Gary Olson is joining Lansing’s Public Sector Consultants (PSC), Michigan’s premier nonpartisan research and policy firm, early next year.
Olson will be a senior expert in public finance and state government policies at PSC and starts Feb. 7, 2011 as an affiliated consultant. He has served as director of the Michigan Senate Fiscal Agency since January 1991; his last day is Friday, December 31.
“Public Sector Consultants is known for the breadth and depth of its knowledge base on public policy issues, and having Gary on our team cements our standing in the public finance arena,” said Jeff Williams, senior vice president of PSC. “Gary’s expertise will enable our firm to provide unparalleled fiscal research and analysis to our clients for years to come.”
As fiscal agency director, Olson led a staff of 23 people who analyzed the state budget and all legislation being considered by the Michigan Senate. Prior to that, he served five years as deputy director. Olson was also a senior economist to the fiscal agency and chief committee aide to the Taxation Committee of the Michigan House.
Earlier this year, Olson was presented with the Steven D. Gold Award, a national award recognizing significant contributions to public financial management in the field of intergovernmental relations and state and local finance.
Olson has a B.A. in Economics from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree from Michigan State University.
He is past-president of the University of the Michigan Alumni Club of Greater Lansing, a member of the Lansing Rotary Club, past-president of the National Association of Legislative Fiscal Officers, and a former staff chair of the National Conference of State Legislatures.
