When I got the news about Peter I was traveling with family and friends, my wife immediately said "what's wrong, what's happened?". I was stunned. It was a great pleasure getting to know Peter as a client of my firm and through the CEO Network. I was always impressed by his wit and intellect but what really drew me to him was his humanity and dry sense of humor. He truly cared for people and wasn't afraid to laugh both at himself and others. I admired him, am proud to have known him, and am saddened I won't be able to engage in the lively conversations he and I had. Blessings to Peter, his family, and friends.

So sad to learn of Peter's death. He was one of Michigan's best boosters, greatest thinkers and most thoughtful friends. I first met Peter when I worked for the Michigan State Medical Society and PSC was supporting our work on an AIDS education initiative. As I began writing this, I remembered that he sent me flowers when I was promoted at MSMS, one of many thoughtful gestures I would appreciate over the years. Few things were better than seeing Peter at an event - you were assured of at least one genuine and interesting conversation. And, it was better still to ask about Elizabeth and see his face light up as he shared some stories. Will be keeping Linda and Elizabeth and Peter's PSC family in our thoughts and hearts as you cope with this loss.

To Peter's Family and Colleagues at PSC
It is hard to find words to express the depth of the loss I feel. From the perspective of a colleague interested the future of young children and the public policies directed at that issue, I don't know anyone I would miss more than Peter. While he was with us we all valued his counsel, trusted his judgment, relished his knowledge, appreciated his responsiveness and loved his optimism! I am certain we are empowered by his contribution, but at the moment he leaves a void that is difficult to consider. May we all be strengthened by memory of this extraordinary man.

I'm shocked and terribly saddened to hear this news. I last spoke with Peter in May right before the Mackinac Policy Conference when he graciously helped Regina Bell and I think through a list of important targets to improve early childhood policy in our state.

He was such an excellent go-to expert and someone we could all count on for the best ideas and strategies to improve public policy. But more importantly, he was tremendously thoughtful and always a joy to work with. I'll miss his wit and passion for ensuring that Michigan had the best for its kids.

I only knew Peter for a short period of time working at PSC but, he was the very first person to introduce himself to in the elevator me and we both were amused at the fact that we are "Go Blue" fans living in a predominantly"Go Green" city. 🙂 Sometimes, people are one meant to be in your life only for a season but, that season can make a huge impact in your life and plant positive seeds that continue to grow in your heart forever. Peter was that person to me and he will always be remembered. My prayer for you Linda, your family & friends is that God continues to keep you all covered under his everlasting mercy, grace and unconditional love.

I will never forget my interview with Peter when I joined PSC back in 2009. His office was a library of policy books, covering a range of topics and a continuum of perspectives. And it was clear from our conversation that Peter had actually read them all. I was intimidated, and yet somehow, he made me feel like the smart one in the room. When I saw him a few months ago, he gave me a great, big, genuine hug, and promised me lunch next time I was in Lansing. To have lunch with Peter more than justified a drive to Lansing. I'm bummed that I didn't make it. My loss.

There are a lot of people around PSC who worked much closer, for much longer with Peter than I did. But PSC's DNA reflects its owners, who spend far more time consumed with contribution than attribution; who walk into every conversation with deep respect for different and new ideas; who wake-up everyday obsessed with making life a little better for Michiganders; and who treat current employees and alumni like family. PSC reflects Peter.

Peter was, "in every sense of the word, a good man" -- I know this because the world would be better off if it had a whole bunch more Peters. Rest in Peace Peter.

I am just heart broken by the news and Maureen's and my condolences go out to Linda, Elizabeth and the whole PSC family. Peter and PSC were the most valued of clients --smart, demanding, fair, and, when the occasion demanded it, courageous. Peter and I both had Ph.Ds in literature and had taught English on the college level. So, yes, we spent a lot of time talking about policy, but it didn't take much for the conversation to turn to the books we were reading. The picture I attached here references Laurel’s reply to an email you sent to the PSC editors this past March, in which you passed along an article about a court ruling that hinged on the lack of a crucial Oxford comma in a labor contract. Peter - During one of our fabulous State Room breakfasts about a year and a half ago, you suggested that I read the book "Abraham" by Bruce Feiler. I have no idea what we would have been talking about that would have led us to that because certainly religion was not one of our top ten topics! However, because you recommended the book, I went out as fast as I could to the nearest Barnes & Noble and got the book. Unfortunately it sat in the pile with all of the other books I have, which seems to occur more often than not. Finally, back in January, as I thought about what I what to accomplish this year - I guess it was a New Year's resolution - I decided that one of my goals would be to finally read "Abraham" because you told me it was a wonderful book and that I would enjoy it. You didn't let me down! I have such a deeper understanding of the connection between our various religions because you pointed me to the role that Abraham played. Thank you for all of our great conversations over the 16 years we've worked together. You have always been an inspiration to me and I am so glad to be able to call you a friend. Peter, Linda and Elizabeth —

This is a picture of the newest addition to our yard — a Lion’s Head Japanese Maple. We recently planted it in (very belated) honor of Kai turning 1, and each time I look at it, I remember the power of the world that nourishes us.

Our yard also reminds me of the faith that’s sometimes needed to keep believing — because in another spot is the spot where our lilies live. Every year as the cold of winter slowly gives way to the spring, the lilies return. But there have been years when the lilies bloom late, and my head gets the better of me: Is it possible that the winter was too harsh? Will the lilies return?

Each year, they return. I never had reason to lose faith.

As you tackle this hardest of journeys, please know that Scott, Kai and I have you all intensity in our thoughts and prayers. And know that we have faith that these dark clouds are going to pass, and that you will be stronger for having gone through this journey.

Much love,
Rose, Scott, Kai

Dear Peter –
I count among my blessings the privilege of having you as a boss, mentor and friend. You set the standard for making the workplace a family, and all those who have worked with you now have that in our professional DNA. I have learned so much from you over the years and am a better person for it.

I hope you know how much you touch people’s lives every day – with your goofy humor, love of life, incredible intellect, passion for music and words, generosity, and empathy. This combination of traits is rare, and it is why so many people are drawn to you.

I just picked up a copy of Our Souls at Night. You introduced me to Kent Haruf (and so many other great books and authors). Since leaving last year, one of the things I have missed the most is popping into your office to jaw about the latest thing we are both reading. I'm looking forward to the story, and I’ll be thinking about you as I dive into the pages of Addie and Louis’ world.

Looking at the pictures on this page (and others from over the years), I’m reminded that you give such great, warm hugs. I’m sending you one of those now, wishing I could give you one for real.

Love and peace to you, Linda and Elizabeth

Here goes: Let yourself feel whatever emotions you are feeling- fear, anger, anguish, depression, hopelessness- don't fight that; save your fight for things that really matter. Learn to ask for support and help. Us 'busy professionals" often are not very good at that. Let the love in. While I have never met your beautiful wife or daughter, you are in my thoughts as well. As the wife and daughter of such a special person, these are tough, tough days for you as well. Don't forget to take care of yourselves, too.
Love,
Joanne Sheldon

Dear Peter,

In your absence, the office has experienced both a spike in computer literacy and signifcant noise reduction. Related? Possibly.

I'm using the quiet to settle into fond memories of you poking fun at me for failing to recognize pop culture references that pre-date my birth, or screaming at Eric to round third. Remembering our meals together and the laughter we shared makes it possible to believe we'll all end up okay.

Use your down time to finally learn how to use Box properly, and I'll drop a couple mid-meeting f-bombs to fill the void.

Missing you every day.

I love you,
Vicari

We also told stories of our own and loved ones experiences with the health care system and shared where it works well and where it doesn’t. Fortunately, you are in good hands in Ann Arbor and I look froward to reading the book you will write when you complete treatment and are feeling better. We can even meet at Woody’s to talk about it. Truly, there is a statewide gush of love and empathy going out to you. As late as tonight (Sept. 27), at an event saluting Paul Hillegonds, I lost track of the people who hugged and poured out their souls over you. Honestly, the whole state is pulling for you.
