Public Sector Consultants (PSC), in partnership with Streamside Ecological Services, was hired by the Kent Conservation District to support the development of the Flat River Watershed Management Plan. The Flat River is designated by the State of Michigan as a “natural river,” which includes various zoning requirements that help protect the integrity of the river and its tributaries. PSC reviewed local zoning ordinances to determine whether they align with existing state requirements and developed a series of recommendations to ensure their alignment. As a result of the project, many townships included within the natural river–designated area have begun the process of updating their zoning requirements.
