Michigan has over 1,385 water utilities and 1,000 wastewater collection and treatment systems throughout the state. Currently, an estimated 10 to 50 percent of drinking water produced by utilities is lost as leakage due to outdated or underinvested infrastructure. Similarly, billions of gallons of treated and untreated sewage has leaked into Michigan’s waterways and continues to do so. Many of the issues with Michigan’s water and wastewater systems are the result of underinvestment in capital improvements due to insufficient rates and financial support for capital improvement and sustainability planning.
